Belleview is pleased to be able to offer several programs designed to support our international students. These programs include ESL, ESL Bible, General English, after school tutoring/helps, and our peer support program.

ESL/General English

These courses are designed to help our international students make large amounts of progress in the areas of phonics, reading, spelling, writing, grammar, and the ability to put their thoughts into sentences.

Both our ESL and General English classes use our Accelerated Reading program. This program monitors each student’s reading level and provides books custom fit to their level. After each book, students are tested on comprehension and gradually move to more difficult books as their reading and comprehension skills increase.

Students also use our Read Master program, which is a fun computer – based program in which students can sharpen their skills.

Texts:

Rapid Reading Improvement 1 & 2 by Dorothy M. Harris

English Composition and Grammar (1st and 2nd Course)

Commonly Misspelled Words

ESL Bible

This course is a Bible introduction specifically designed for international students with limited capacity in understanding and using the English language. The text used is a Bible that is especially designed for students who are developing English as a second language. Passages have been rephrased to simplify the vocabulary while retaining the original meanings.

The class is taught by teachers with a background in teaching English as a Second Language and some emphasis is placed on students exercising English reading, writing and speaking skills.

The material covered throughout the one year course provides students with a basic understanding of the Bible, the foundational text of Christianity and much of western civilization.

Tutoring/After School Help

For students with questions or needing some extra help, teachers are available for tutoring/help before and after school (students can coordinate with teachers to arrange times). Belleview also offers an after school tutoring/homework room where students can go from 3:00 – 4:00.

Peer Support Program

Each new international student to Belleview is paired with a U.S. student mentor/guide to show them around the school and help them with adjusting to U.S. life. This program helps our new students overcome cultural differences, build friendships, and makes transitioning into Belleview easier.
