Learning Environment Strengths

Belleview Christian School should be applauded for achieving a 4 Star Rating and increasing

their average Learning Enviornment score from 5.10 to 5.66. Congratulations!

Each classroom is arranged with the comfort of the teachers and children in mind, to support

overall growth and learning. The classrooms provide ample space with natural lighting, good

ventilation, and temperature control. The space allows teachers to arrange a variety of interest

centers for the children, including creativity with art, dramatic play, music; discovery with science

materials, blocks and sand/water play. Children are also able to escape the pressures of the

group setting in multiple quiet, and private spaces. They can also relax, daydream, or play quietly

in cozy areas provided in the classroom. Outdoors, children have access to a variety of gross

motor equipment to stimulate a wide range of gross motor skills. Children's natural need for quiet

and active play are recognized and supported in the classroom and the outdoor play area.

Language and reasoning development is an integral part of the program philosophy. The

classrooms scored an average 6.75 for the Language and Reasoning subscale! The staff

consistently goes above and beyond to provide children with a language rich environment. They

understand the importance of providing children access to a wide variety of books and other

language materials such as file folder games and displays. Children are read to daily both in

group settings and informally to interested children during free play or to extend an activity.

Children are also given daily access to materials to encourage language such as dramatic play

props, animals and toy people in the block areas, and puppets with the books. Beyond the

materials provided, teachers use language activities to develop reasoning skills, introducing

concepts while children play with materials and by using actual experiences as a basis for

concept development. They help children to link their spoken words with the written word by

writing children's dictations on their drawings and by writing responses to a classroom question.

Children's language and reasoning skills are well supported at Belleview Christian School.

The program also scored a 6.86 for Interactions! The teachers provide nurturing interactions that

support children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. They provide active

and engaging supervision to support children's learning and to protect their safety. Teachers assist

children when they need help or encouragement and maintain a balance between a child's

need to explore their world independently and the teacher's input to learning. Appropriate and

positive discipline techniques are used effectively and children are encouraged to use a problem

solving process to work through conflicts. Positive, warm, and nurturing interactions give children

a sense of security allowing them to learn and grow.

It is apparent the teachers take pride in their work and genuinely enjoy working with young
